"People serving people since 1966"

About US

We are a non-profit Community Action Agency that provides a wide range of services to low and moderate-income residents in upstate South Carolina. SHARE was chartered as an educational charitable organization in 1965 under the name of Greenville County Council for Community Actions, Inc. and is designated as a 501c(3) nonprofit organization by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The agency was renamed SHARE in 1979 and has consistently helped thousand of families annually in it's primary service areas of Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.

What Are Community Action Agencies?

Community Action Agencies are local, public and private non-profit agencies that work to alleviate poverty and empower low-income families in communities throughout the United States. CAA's were originally created through the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to fight America's "War on Poverty". Today, more than 35 years later, there are over 1,000 Community Action Agencies nationwide that provide services to more than 98% of the nations cities and counties, and are a primary source of support for the more than 38 million Americans living in poverty.

SHARE approaches these goals by providing a variety of programs that serve low-income children, families and individuals with the common goal of enabling them to eventually become independent of any public or charitable assistance. In other words - to become self-sufficient.

"Becoming self-sufficient is a task that is not always easily accomplished due to a multitude of reasons such as; poor health and nutrition, lack of education, lack of available work, low paying jobs, individual disabilities, etc. In some cases, assistance in one of these areas may be all that is needed to get a family or individual back on their feet.

However, in most cases, people have complex, interlocking problems requiring a combination of different approaches. There are no simple solutions to complex problems. For this reason, SHARE offers a variety of programs designed to meet a variety of needs through its two program areas: Children and Family Development and Community Economic Opportunity."

Share Board of Directors

One of the primary goals of SHARE is to involve three sectors of the community - public, low income, and private - in the identification and application of strategies to eliminate the causes of poverty. Supporting this function, our Board of Directors is set up as a unique tripartite council, composed of 21 members: 1/3 public officials, 1/3 client representatives, and 1/3 private sector, including business, industry, labor, religion, education, etc. They are also representative of the 4 counties SHARE serves. Listed below are the 2005 SHARE Board of Directors and their affiliations:

The "1200 for SHARE" Resource Development Advisory Board was formed in July 2000 and is composed of current SHARE Board members, local business leaders, public officials, as well as individuals from SHARE's four county service area. Its primary mission is to assist in the planning and implementation of SHARE's Annual Fundraising Campaign: "1200 For SHARE".
